Summer nights at Springview Field in Spring Hill are what baseball is all about. Whether you are in the stands, at the top of the steps, or on the field enjoying the cool summer air coming off the lake in shallow right field, they are an experience to remember. Wednesday night was one of these nights, as the Bulldogs captured a 13-3 come-from-behind victory against the Hurricanes.
Things looked a bit shaky early on for the Bulldogs. However, with the help of team engineer/3rd baseman Greg Wittmer and the rest of the lineup, the Bulldogs were able to re-route the pond blocking their path to home plate, which led to 13 runs in only 6 innings of play. The combined efforts of Boyd and Dellapenna held the Hurricanes to only 3 runs.
Some would say that the home crowd support has also been a huge factor. "Our fans have really been the 10th man this season," said Wednesday night's would-have-been-winning-pitcher-had-he-pitched-5-innings Bill Boyd. "I mean literally. A couple weeks ago I missed a game, and somebody that showed up to watch me play ended up being our 10th man, in case of injury."
The Bulldogs now find themselves in the midst of a heated playoff race, and the excitement surrounding their late-season surge was certainly apparent Wednesday night. The old, familiar chants of "Let's go Bulldogs!" and "F*** YOU!" could be heard throughout the night, an obvious sign that "Bulldog fever" is back in the town of Spring Hill.
The Bulldogs are 6-2 in their past eight games, and hope to continue their success this weekend against the Rakers and Matadors.
