Commissioner’s Report 10/14/2009: Fall or Winter?

With the weather having a difficult time behaving in a seasonally appropriate way, I thought I would give a few updates regarding the fall and winter seasons in the NABA.

Fall – Every effort will be made to play between 8-11 games this fall. If we get rained out for a fourth straight week, expect some games to be made up on weeknights and Sundays. With all the planning, I really didn’t expect four straight weekends of unseasonable weather. I will be out of town this weekend, so I’m leaving our League Webmaster in charge… Mike Martin. Managers will need to assist him in determining if fields are playable this weekend.

Winter – There will only be a Session II from January through March. I expect the price to be the same as last year ($115 per person). Registration starts December 1st, and we are limited again to two teams of 8 (16 total players).

Other notable events – This week marks the birthday of a few notable people in the Pittsburgh NABA. Be sure to send a birthday wish to the League Treasurer, Vinny Gala (16th); Black Sox manager and Fall Umpire, Kenny Rayl (20th); and Ducks and Blues pitcher extraordinaire, Nick Homa (18th).

  1. Some birthday ideas:
Vinny – loves to golf. Especially driving with long woods. A towel might be appropriate here.
Kenny – he had to sell his jet ski last season because of financial constraints. Perhaps a few muscle shirts, and an intertube for recreational use.

  2. Fall Ball players should just be refunded their money and call it a year. Fields are beyond playable. It’s going to snow today.

  3. Lets pack this up and move on down to bradenton. i’m sure the weather is better there, haha.

  4. Weather is great in daytona beach for sure. Rained all the way down though.

They need to take Mellon Arena apart piece by piece and reassemble it at Pie Traynor Field, so we can have a dome baseball stadium for Summer and Fall Ball and a hockey league in the winter.

  6. Has this fall season been scrapped yet? It’s pouring outside now and another wet one tomorrow. Is this the 4th or 5th Saturday in a row of rain?
